What an exit button does. An exit button, also called a door release switch, is what lets people leave a room that is secured by access control. The reader on the outside checks who may enter; the exit button on the inside simply releases the lock so anyone can get out. Every compliant access control installation needs one, and in most cases it is a legal and safety expectation rather than an optional extra.

Choosing a no touch exit button. A no touch exit button, sometimes sold as a touchless or infrared exit button, releases the door when a hand passes in front of the sensor without physical contact. Demand for these rose sharply after COVID and they remain the preferred choice for hospitals, clinics, laboratories, food premises, and any high traffic doorway where hundreds of people press the same surface each day. Because nothing is pressed, there is no mechanical wear, which usually means a longer service life than a conventional button in busy locations.

Indoor touchless exit buttons and where they suit. Most touchless models are designed for indoor or sheltered positions. Corridors, reception areas, clean rooms, and office lobbies are ideal. If a door is fully exposed to rain, dust storms, or direct sunlight, discuss the location with us first, because infrared sensing can behave unpredictably in strong direct sunlight and outdoor grade housing may be needed.

Mechanical push buttons, and when they are still the right answer. A conventional push button remains cheaper, simpler, and extremely reliable. For a store room, a server room, or a door used by a handful of staff, a plain push to exit button is entirely adequate and there is no reason to pay more. Stainless steel and metal faced buttons suit doors that see rough handling; plastic bodied buttons are fine for ordinary office use.

Emergency and break glass units. Fire exits and doors on escape routes often require an emergency break glass release in addition to the normal exit button. These force the door open when the glass is broken, regardless of the state of the access control system, and are what allows people out during a fire or power failure. Resettable versions can be reused after testing; non resettable versions need a replacement element. If a door forms part of your escape route, ask us which type your situation calls for.

Understanding NO and NC wiring. Exit buttons are supplied as normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC), and some units offer both. Which one you need depends on the lock. Magnetic locks, which hold the door shut while powered, generally require the circuit to be broken to release, so an NC contact is used. Electric bolt and strike locks commonly use NO. Getting this wrong is the single most common wiring error we see, and it results in a door that either never releases or never locks. If you are unsure, tell us which lock you are using and we will confirm.

Planning the installation. Mount the button on the secure side of the door, at a height that suits everyone using it, typically around waist to chest level. Keep the cable inside conduit rather than surface clipped, since an exposed exit button cable is an easy target for anyone trying to release the door from outside. Where load shedding is frequent, plan a backup supply so the door behaves predictably when mains power drops.
