How to choose a WiFi camera

WiFi has a range problem, and boundary walls are the reason

A camera on your gate is often the one furthest from the router, with a brick or concrete wall in between. That is exactly where WiFi drops. Indoors and on a covered porch, WiFi is excellent. For a far gate or a rooftop, either add a mesh point or use a SIM-based camera.

Solar and SIM models solve the hardest installations

The Imou Solar Plus at Rs 32,500 needs no power cable and no WiFi — it runs on its own panel and a mobile SIM. It costs more than a wired camera, but on a plot boundary or an under-construction site there is often nothing to plug into.

PTZ means you can follow, fixed means you cannot

Pan-tilt-zoom cameras sweep and track movement, so one unit can cover a whole courtyard. A fixed bullet camera sees only where you point it, but has nothing to wear out and holds its aim for years. Use PTZ for wide areas, fixed for a specific doorway.

Colour at night is a real difference, not a spec-sheet one

Standard infrared gives you a black-and-white shape. Colour night vision gives you the colour of a shirt or a car, which is the difference between footage and evidence. Look for it on anything covering an entrance.

Storage: card first, NVR when it grows

One or two cameras run happily on a MicroSD card up to 256GB. Beyond three cameras, or if you need weeks of history rather than days, move to an NVR.

Plan for load-shedding at the router, not the camera

A WiFi camera with power is still useless if the router is off. A small UPS on the router and modem keeps the whole system reporting, and costs less than another camera.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a WiFi camera cost in Pakistan?

An indoor WiFi PTZ camera starts around Rs 4,950. Outdoor models with night vision run Rs 8,200–16,700, triple-lens and long-zoom models reach Rs 18,000–23,900, and a solar SIM camera is around Rs 32,500.

Do WiFi cameras work without internet?

They keep recording to the MicroSD card, and you can still view them on the local network. What stops is remote viewing on mobile data and cloud notifications.

How far can a WiFi camera be from the router?

In open indoor space, 10–15 metres is comfortable. Through one brick wall, expect much less. Beyond that use a mesh extender, run ethernet, or choose a SIM-based camera.

How much SD card do I need?

A 64GB card holds roughly a week of motion-triggered recording on a single 3MP camera. Continuous recording at 6MP will fill 256GB in days, so match the card to how you actually record.

Can I watch these cameras on my phone from another city?

Yes. Imou and EZVIZ cameras connect through their own apps and work anywhere you have data, provided the camera has internet at its end.

Are these cameras weatherproof enough for Karachi summers?

The outdoor models are rated IP66 or better, which covers rain and dust. What shortens their life is direct sun all day — mounting under an eave or a small shade extends it considerably.
