Quick answer: Smoke detectors in Pakistan cost from Rs 1,700 at ZZ Marts. A GLOBAL 2-wire conventional smoke detector is Rs 1,700 and connects to a fire alarm panel; a Tuya WiFi smoke detector (Rs 4,149) works on its own and alerts your phone; a battery CO and smoke alarm (Rs 5,799) needs no wiring at all; and a Cease Fire CFI5131 addressable detector (Rs 5,800) is for buildings with an addressable panel. In kitchens, use a heat detector (Rs 1,800) instead of a smoke detector.

The four kinds of smoke detector, explained

1. Conventional (2-wire) detectors

The most common type in Pakistani offices, shops and hospitals. Detectors are wired in groups called zones to a fire alarm control panel. When one detects smoke, the panel shows which zone is in alarm and sounds the sirens. They are cheap, simple and easy to service. Pair them with a 2-zone, 4-zone or 8-zone GLOBAL panel.

2. Addressable detectors

Each detector has its own address on a loop, so the panel shows exactly which room the fire is in, not just the zone. They cost more per point and need a matching addressable panel, so they suit large buildings. Read conventional vs addressable fire alarm systems to choose between the two.

3. 4-wire detectors with a relay

A 4-wire detector such as the 2188 takes power on one pair and switches a relay on the other. That lets you add smoke detection to a burglar alarm panel or drive a siren through a relay, without buying a separate fire panel.

4. Standalone and WiFi detectors

These have their own siren and power. A WiFi smoke detector also sends an alert to the Tuya or Smart Life app, so you know about smoke at home while you are at work. A CO and smoke alarm runs on AA batteries, so it keeps working during load-shedding without a UPS.

Smoke detector or heat detector?

Smoke detector Heat detector
Reacts to Smoke particles High or fast-rising temperature
Warning speed Earliest, often before flames Later, once the room heats up
False alarms from cooking or steam Likely Rare
Use in Bedrooms, halls, offices, corridors, stairwells, stores Kitchens, generator rooms, boiler rooms, dusty workshops
Price at ZZ Marts From Rs 1,700 Rs 1,800

Most buildings need both: smoke detectors in the living and working areas, and heat detectors where smoke or steam is normal.

Which smoke detector should you buy?

Where to put smoke detectors

  • On the ceiling, near the middle of the room or corridor.
  • In every bedroom, the hallway outside bedrooms, every floor and the top of the stairwell.
  • Away from AC vents, ceiling fans, windows and exhaust fans, which blow smoke away from the sensor.
  • Not inside kitchens or bathrooms: use a heat detector in the kitchen.
  • For commercial buildings, follow the spacing in the panel manual or a fire code such as BS 5839 or NFPA 72, and have the layout checked by your installer.

Looking after your detectors

  • Press the test button once a month.
  • Replace batteries in battery alarms when they chirp, or once a year.
  • Clean the vents with a soft brush or vacuum every six months; dust is a common cause of false alarms.
  • Keep wired detectors on a panel with a backup battery, so they keep working in power cuts.

A smoke detector does not detect gas leaks. For Sui gas and LPG, read our gas leak detector guide. For the difference between a single alarm and a full system, see smoke detectors vs fire alarm systems.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a smoke detector cost in Pakistan?
At ZZ Marts, a GLOBAL 2-wire conventional smoke detector costs Rs 1,700, a 4-wire 2188 smoke detector Rs 1,999, a Tuya WiFi smoke detector Rs 4,149, a battery CO and smoke alarm Rs 5,799 and a Cease Fire CFI5131 addressable smoke detector Rs 5,800. A matching GLOBAL heat detector costs Rs 1,800.

What is the difference between a smoke detector and a heat detector?
A smoke detector reacts to smoke particles, so it gives the earliest warning in bedrooms, offices, halls and corridors. A heat detector reacts to a high or fast-rising temperature, so it ignores cooking smoke and steam. Use heat detectors in kitchens, generator rooms and dusty areas, and smoke detectors everywhere else.

Does a smoke detector need a fire alarm panel?
It depends on the type. 2-wire conventional detectors and addressable detectors must be wired to a fire alarm control panel, which powers them and sounds the sirens. A standalone battery alarm, such as the CO and smoke alarm, and a WiFi smoke detector work on their own without a panel.

What is the difference between a 2-wire and a 4-wire smoke detector?
A 2-wire detector takes power and signals the alarm over the same pair of wires, and connects to a conventional fire alarm panel zone. A 4-wire detector has one pair for power and a separate relay output, so it can be connected to a burglar alarm panel or a relay that switches a siren.

Can I use a WiFi smoke detector without a fire alarm system?
Yes. A Tuya WiFi smoke detector sounds its own alarm and sends an alert to the Tuya or Smart Life app on your phone, so you are warned even when you are away. It suits homes, flats and small shops that do not need a full fire alarm panel.

Will a smoke detector go off from cooking?
It can. Smoke and frying fumes trigger smoke detectors, which is why kitchens should use a heat detector instead. Mount smoke detectors outside the kitchen door, not inside it.

Where should a smoke detector be installed?
On the ceiling, near the middle of the room or corridor, away from AC vents, ceiling fans and windows where airflow can push smoke away. Put one in every bedroom, in the hallway outside bedrooms and on every floor, plus the stairwell.

How often should smoke detectors be tested?
Press the test button once a month, change batteries in battery alarms when they chirp or once a year, and clean the detector with a soft brush or vacuum every six months. Panel systems should be tested by walking each zone at least once a year.

Does a smoke detector detect gas leaks?
No. A smoke detector senses smoke, not Sui gas or LPG. For gas, use a gas leak detector, and for heaters and geysers add a carbon monoxide alarm.
