How a motion sensor light switch works
A PIR (passive infrared) sensor detects the body heat of a person moving across its field of view. When it sees movement, it switches the light on; when the movement stops, it waits for a set delay and switches the light off. Many models also have a light sensor, so the light only comes on when it is dark.
How to choose one
1. Match the load rating
The watt rating is the maximum lighting load the sensor can switch. LED bulbs draw very little, so a 30W sensor can run several LED lamps — but add up the wattage of every light on the circuit and keep it below the rating.
2. Choose by where it mounts
Wall switch: replaces an ordinary switch at a room entrance. Ceiling sensor: covers the area below it, ideal for corridors, stairs and landings. Outdoor sensor: for porches, gates and driveways — choose the weatherproof JQR model for exposed walls. Panel-mount sensor: small sensors that fit into a light fitting or panel.
3. Skip the wiring if you want
A motion sensor LED bulb or an E27 bulb holder sensor screws straight into an existing light holder — a five-minute job for a store room, bathroom or stairwell, with no electrician.
4. Mount it where it can see movement
PIR sensors detect movement across their view best. Mount them about 2–2.5 metres high, away from direct sunlight, heaters and air-conditioning outlets, which can cause false triggers. PIR does not work through glass.
