How an EAS system works
Security antennas stand at the shop entrance. Each item on sale carries an RF tag or label. At the till, staff either remove a hard tag with a detacher or deactivate a soft label on the deactivator pad. If an item still carrying an active tag passes the antennas, the alarm sounds, so staff know an unpaid item is leaving.
Hard tags or soft labels?
Hard tags clip through clothing, bags and similar goods. They are reused many times, so the running cost is low, and they are removed at the till with a detacher. Best for clothing stores, boutiques, shoe shops and bag shops.
Soft labels stick onto boxes and packaging. Each one is used once and switched off at the till with a deactivator. Best for pharmacies, cosmetics, supermarkets and electronics accessories, where you cannot clip a tag through the product.
Many shops use both: hard tags on clothing and soft labels on packaged items.
Choosing the antenna
