The open frame drop bolt, for doors with no surface to recess into. This 12V electric bolt lock uses an open mounting design rather than a fully enclosed housing, which makes it suitable for doors and frames where there is limited depth to recess a conventional bolt body. The bolt still drives down into a receiving plate, giving the same mechanical security, but with a mounting arrangement that fits where a standard bolt will not.
When you need this rather than a standard drop bolt. The deciding factor is nearly always available depth. Narrow aluminium sections, slim door frames, and doors where the top rail is shallow simply do not have room for a fully housed bolt body. Rather than compromising the fitting or abandoning the bolt approach, an open frame version mounts in the space you actually have. If a standard bolt looked like it would not fit your door, this is usually the answer.
Fail secure operation and load shedding. Like other drop bolts, this stays locked when power is removed, keeping the door secure through outages. That is ideal overnight for store rooms and godowns, and a genuine consideration for any door that must remain accessible. Without power and without a manual override, that door stays shut until the electricity returns. If that is unacceptable for the room, fit our key cylinder version, add backup power, or install an emergency break glass release.
Bolt versus magnetic lock. A magnet holds the door and releases the instant power fails, which suits escape routes. A bolt physically pins the door and resists forcing better, which suits secure rooms. Bolts also need much less mounting surface, which is exactly why they win on narrow and slim doors. Tell us how the door is used and we will recommend rather than default to whichever is dearer.
Timer delay, set it generously. The adjustable delay before the bolt drops exists so the door can close and settle first. Too short, and the bolt fires while the door is still swinging, jamming against the plate or missing the hole entirely. This single setting accounts for most complaints that a bolt lock is defective when the lock is working perfectly well.
Alignment is critical on an open frame mount. A bolt must physically enter a hole, and an open frame design gives you slightly less inherent guidance than a fully housed unit, so careful alignment matters even more. Fit the receiving plate so the bolt lands centred rather than at the edge of the opening. Doors settle on their hinges over time and frames move noticeably with heat and humidity through the year, so leave tolerance and re-check a few weeks after installation.
Lower power draw than a maglock. A drop bolt only draws current while operating rather than continuously, unlike a magnetic lock which consumes power the whole time the door is locked. Across several doors this changes power supply sizing meaningfully and reduces running cost.
What the full installation needs. Beyond the lock: a controller such as an access keypad or card reader, an exit button on the inside, a power supply rated for the lock, and mounting hardware appropriate to your door. Ordering these together avoids the familiar problem of a job stopping halfway because one component was overlooked.
Cabling. Keep the cable inside conduit and on the secure side of the door. An exposed lock cable is both a maintenance weakness and an obvious point of interference.
How do I know if I need open frame or standard? Send us a photograph of the door and frame with a rough measurement of the available depth and we will tell you which fits before you order.
Can I use it on a fire exit? Not alone. A fail secure bolt on an escape route requires an emergency break glass release alongside it.
Is there a version I can open with a key? Yes, our key cylinder drop bolt lets you withdraw the bolt mechanically regardless of power.
Why is the bolt binding? Alignment or too short a timer delay in nearly every case. Both are adjustable.
