Buying guide
How to choose a CCTV camera
Start with where it goes, not the megapixels
An indoor camera watching a shop counter has completely different requirements from one covering a factory gate. Outdoor cameras need weatherproofing — look for an IP66 rating — and ideally a wired connection, because WiFi through a boundary wall is unreliable.
WiFi or wired?
WiFi cameras install in minutes and suit homes, shops and small offices where the router is close. Wired and PoE cameras cost more to install but stay connected when WiFi drops, carry power and data on one cable, and are the right choice for anything you would be upset to lose footage from.
4MP is the practical floor
Below that you can see that a person was there but not who they were. 6MP and above matters when you need to read a number plate or identify a face at distance. Higher resolution also means more storage.
Night performance is where cheap cameras fail
Standard infrared gives usable black-and-white images. Colour night vision needs either a supplementary light or a larger sensor — the difference between “someone in dark clothing” and a description worth giving the police.
Load-shedding is a real design factor
A mains-powered camera is off when the power is. If continuous coverage matters, plan a UPS for the router and recorder, or choose battery and solar models.

What is the difference between an IP camera and a WiFi camera?
Both are network cameras. “WiFi camera” describes how it connects. “IP camera” usually implies a wired ethernet or PoE connection. Wired is more reliable; WiFi is far easier to install.
Do I need an NVR or can I just use a memory card?
For one or two cameras, a MicroSD card up to 256GB is usually enough. For three or more, or if you need footage kept for weeks, an NVR is the better option.
Will CCTV cameras work during load-shedding?
Only with backup power. A small UPS covering the router and NVR keeps the system recording. Battery and solar cameras keep working independently.
Can I install a CCTV camera myself?
WiFi cameras, yes — most set up through a phone app in fifteen minutes. Wired and PoE systems need cable runs and an NVR configured, which is usually worth paying an installer for.
