How to specify an access controlled door
A door needs four things, and people forget the third
A reader or keypad to identify the person; a lock to hold the door; an exit device to get out; and a power supply sized for all of it. Buying a fingerprint reader and discovering you have no exit button and no 12V supply is the most common mistake we see.
Choose the lock by door type, not by price
Magnetic locks hold with an electromagnet and suit glass and aluminium doors — strong, no cutting needed, but they fail open when power is lost. Electric bolt locks drop a pin into the frame, suit wooden and metal doors, and can be specified fail-secure. Which behaviour you want is a fire-safety decision as much as a security one.
Access method affects daily friction more than security
