How to choose a mount

Two numbers decide everything: VESA and weight

VESA is the hole pattern on the back of your screen in millimetres — commonly 75×75 or 100×100 for monitors, 200×200 up to 600×400 for TVs. Weight capacity must exceed your screen's actual weight, not its screen size. Get either wrong and the mount will not attach or will not hold.

Match the mount to how you use the screen

Fixed brackets sit flat to the wall and suit a TV you never move. Tilting brackets help when the screen is mounted high. Full-motion arms swing, extend and rotate — essential for a monitor you reposition daily, usually unnecessary for a living room TV.

Gas spring arms are worth the money for desks

A gas spring holds the screen wherever you set it and moves with a light push. For anyone at a desk all day, correct monitor height is the difference between comfort and neck pain — the top of the screen should sit roughly at eye level.

Check the wall before you check the price

Solid brick or concrete takes a heavy TV without complaint. Drywall, partition and hollow block walls need fixings that land on structure, or a floor stand instead. This is the most common cause of a mount failing, and it fails all at once.

Cable management is not a luxury

Trailing cables get caught in the arm's movement, which is how HDMI ports get damaged.

Frequently asked questions

What VESA size do I need?

Measure the distance in millimetres between the four mounting holes on the back of your screen, horizontally and vertically. Monitors are usually 75×75 or 100×100. TVs range from 200×200 to 600×400.

How much weight can a monitor arm hold?

Most gas spring arms support around 2–9kg per screen, covering the majority of 17–32 inch monitors. Always check your monitor's actual weight rather than assuming from its size.

Can I mount a TV on a drywall or hollow wall?

Only if the fixings reach structural studs or you use fixings rated for that wall type. If unsure what is behind the plaster, a floor or table stand is safer.

What is the difference between a gas spring arm and a standard arm?

A gas spring counterbalances the screen so it stays where you position it and moves with a light push. A standard arm needs manual adjustment with screws.

How high should a monitor be?

The top of the screen at or slightly below eye level when sitting upright, roughly an arm's length away.
