Smart Switches in Pakistan: The Neutral Wire Problem

21/07/2026 Reviews & Testimonials

Most smart switch problems in Pakistan come down to one wire. Not the brand, not the app, not the WiFi — a single missing conductor in your switch board that nobody checks until the electrician has already opened the wall. This guide explains what to verify before you buy, so you do not end up with a switch that cannot be installed.

The neutral wire problem, explained simply

An ordinary wall switch does one thing: it breaks the connection to the light. It needs no power of its own, so two wires are enough, a live in and a switched live out to the bulb.

A smart switch is different. It contains electronics that must stay awake permanently, listening for your phone even when the light is off. Those electronics need a continuous circuit, which means both a live and a neutral at the switch board itself.

Here is where Pakistani wiring causes trouble. In a great many homes, particularly those built before around 2010, the neutral was never run down to the switch board at all. The electrician took power to the ceiling point first and dropped only a live down to the wall. That works perfectly for a normal switch and is not a fault in the wiring. It simply means there is no neutral sitting in the board for a smart switch to use.

How to check before you spend anything

Ask your electrician to switch off the circuit at the breaker and open the switch board. You are looking for how many wires are present. Two wires per switch usually means live and switched live, and no neutral. A separate wire, commonly black or blue, sitting in the board and not connected to the switch is usually the neutral.

Do not attempt this yourself unless you are competent with mains electricity. A photograph of the opened board, taken safely by your electrician, is enough for us to tell you what you are dealing with. Customers send us these on WhatsApp every week and it takes a minute to answer.

What to do if there is no neutral

You have three practical options, and they are not equally good.

Run a neutral to the board. This is the proper fix and makes the board ready for any smart device, now or later. It means chasing a wire from the ceiling point down to the switch, so it suits homes under renovation or where the wall is already open. Most expensive in labour, best long term.

Buy a no-neutral smart switch. These are made specifically for this situation and work by drawing a tiny current through the light fitting itself. They are a genuine solution, but be aware of the trade-off: they have minimum load requirements and can misbehave with very low wattage LED bulbs, sometimes causing a faint glow or slight flicker when off. Check that the model explicitly states no-neutral support before buying, and tell us what bulbs you are using.

Use a smart relay module at the light instead. Rather than replacing the wall switch, a small module is fitted at the ceiling point where the neutral already exists. Your existing switch stays on the wall and keeps working normally, while the module adds app control. This is often the cheapest and least disruptive answer, and it is under-used simply because people do not know it exists.

Count your gangs before you order

A gang is one switch position on the plate. If your existing board has four switches, you need a 4 gang panel. This sounds obvious but it is the second most common ordering mistake we see, usually in the other direction: someone orders an 8 gang because it seems better value, then finds they have four circuits and four permanently dead buttons on the wall.

Count the individual switches on the board you are replacing. Also measure the plate size, since smart panels are thicker than mechanical switches and a shallow wall box may not close properly once the switch is fitted.

Fans are not lights

A standard smart switch gang is designed to turn a lighting circuit on and off. A ceiling fan needs speed regulation, which is a different job. Connecting a fan to a plain lighting gang gives you a fan that runs at one speed, or does not run properly at all.

The same caution applies to anything with a heavy load. Geysers and air conditioners draw far more current than lights, and a switch rated for lighting will overheat if asked to carry them. Match the switch rating to what it is actually controlling, and ask if you are unsure. An under-rated switch is a fire risk, not just an inconvenience.

The 2.4GHz WiFi detail that catches people out

Almost all smart switches connect on 2.4GHz WiFi and do not support 5GHz. If your router broadcasts both bands under one network name, pairing will often fail with no useful error message. The usual fix is to temporarily separate the bands, or to disable 5GHz during setup and re-enable it afterwards.

Signal strength at the board also matters more than people expect. The switch sits inside a wall box, sometimes behind metal, so a router that works fine for your phone in the same room may still give an unreliable connection at the switch. If a device keeps dropping offline in the app, that is almost always signal rather than a faulty unit.

What happens during load shedding

This is the question we are asked most often in our stores, and it deserves a straight answer.

When mains power goes, the switch has no power and the lights are off regardless. When power returns, the switch restores itself and reconnects to your WiFi automatically, and any schedules you have set resume. Most switches let you choose whether a circuit returns to its previous state after an outage or stays off, and it is worth setting this deliberately rather than discovering the behaviour by accident.

The more important point concerns your router. App control needs internet, and your internet needs your router powered. If your router is on a UPS and your lights are on a UPS circuit, everything continues working. If not, you lose app control until power returns, though the switch still operates manually by touch throughout, which is the part that matters.

Manual operation still works, and that matters

A good smart switch is still a switch. Touching the panel turns the light on and off with no phone, no app, and no internet involved. This is worth saying clearly because it is the concern most often raised by families with elderly parents, young children, or regular guests. Nobody in the house becomes dependent on a smartphone to turn on a light.

Where smart switches genuinely earn their cost

Being honest about this saves you money. The strongest cases are outdoor and boundary lighting on a sunset schedule so nobody has to remember, an all-off control at the main door for leaving the house, shop and signage lighting scheduled to opening and closing hours, and circuits in awkward positions such as stairwells and roof lights that are inconvenient to reach.

The weakest case is a room you walk into and out of constantly, where reaching for the switch was never a problem in the first place. Fitting smart switches everywhere is rarely worth it. Fitting them in the four or five places that genuinely annoy you is money well spent.

Common questions

Can I install a smart switch myself? This is mains wiring inside a live board. Unless you are genuinely competent with electrical work, use an electrician. The switch is inexpensive; a mistake is not.

Will it work if my internet is down? Yes, by touch, and stored schedules keep running. Only remote control from outside your home pauses.

Do I need a hub? WiFi switches connect directly to your router and need no hub, which is why they suit most Pakistani homes. Zigbee models need a hub but use less power and cope better across many devices.

Can I mix smart and normal switches in one house? Yes. Most people upgrade a few boards rather than the whole house, which is the sensible approach.

Why does my LED glow faintly when switched off? This usually happens with a no-neutral switch on a very low wattage LED. A bypass capacitor at the fitting normally resolves it.

Will voice control work? Yes, through the app supported assistants, once you have named each gang sensibly. Switch 1 through Switch 8 becomes useless within a week.

Before you buy, check these five things

Is there a neutral wire at the board? How many gangs do you actually need? Is anything on the circuit a fan, geyser, or air conditioner? Is your WiFi usable at that wall position on 2.4GHz? Is the wall box deep enough for a thicker panel? Answer those five and installation day holds no surprises.

Ask before you order

ZZ Marts has supplied electrical and security hardware across Pakistan since 2005, trading as Zam Zam Traders. We stock Tuya and Smart Life compatible touch switches in a range of gang sizes and finishes, smart relay modules for boards without a neutral, WiFi breakers with energy metering, PIR sensors, and smart plugs and sockets.

Send us a photograph of your opened switch board on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly whether a standard switch will work, whether you need a no-neutral model, or whether a relay module behind the ceiling point is the better answer for your situation. We would far rather have that conversation before you order than process a return afterwards. You are also welcome to visit our Karachi store in Saddar or our Lahore store in Garhi Shahu and see the panels in person.
