ZZ Marts’ Motion Sensor category features photocell day/night switches (10A, 20A, and 30A models) that automatically turn lighting on at dusk and off at dawn, plus a recessed 220V ceiling PIR motion sensor for automatic lighting triggered by movement. These are straightforward, low-cost ways to automate outdoor and indoor lighting without needing a full smart-home setup. Our blog covers more on home automation basics if you’re new to the category, and our Karachi and Lahore teams can help you pick the right sensor for your space and lighting load.

What a PIR motion sensor does. A PIR, or passive infrared, motion sensor detects the heat given off by a person moving within its field of view. It does not emit anything; it simply watches for a change in infrared heat, which is why it is reliable, uses very little power, and works in complete darkness. That combination is why PIR is the standard technology for automatic lighting and for intrusion detection inside buildings.

Automatic lighting, the most common use. The everyday application is switching lights on when someone enters and off again after they leave. Corridors, stairwells, car porches, washrooms, store rooms, and building entrances are the usual places. Beyond convenience, this saves real money on electricity in areas where lights are routinely left burning for hours, which in a plaza stairwell or a factory corridor adds up quickly against current tariffs.

Security use and how it differs. The same technology in a wired indoor intrusion detector connects to a burglar alarm panel instead of a light. When the premises are armed and the sensor detects movement, the alarm triggers. Indoor detectors of this type are what most Pakistani offices, shops, and homes use to cover internal rooms, working alongside door contacts on entry points and beam sensors on the boundary.

Choosing by load rating. Sensors are rated for the electrical load they can switch, commonly 20W, 30W, 50W and upward. The rating must comfortably exceed the total wattage of the lights connected. LED lighting draws very little, so a modest rating covers a lot of bulbs, but connecting a heavy load to an undersized sensor will burn out its relay. If you are switching a large bank of lights, use the sensor to drive a relay module rather than the load directly.

Detection range and coverage angle. Every sensor has a stated range and a coverage angle. A ceiling mounted recessed unit typically gives wide circular coverage below it, which suits corridors and rooms. A wall mounted unit projects a fan shaped pattern forward, which suits entrances and passages. Mount at the height stated for the model, since a sensor fitted too high loses sensitivity and one fitted too low is triggered by pets and passing animals.

Avoiding false triggers in Pakistani conditions. PIR sensors respond to moving heat, so anything that creates rapid temperature change in view can trigger them. Do not point one directly at an air conditioner outlet, a heater, a window with direct sunlight, or moving curtains. Outdoors, mount away from foliage that sways in wind. In summer, when ambient temperature approaches body temperature, sensitivity naturally falls, which is normal physics rather than a fault; positioning the sensor so people cross its beam rather than walk straight at it improves detection considerably.

Adjusting time delay and sensitivity. Most units have adjustable time delay, controlling how long the light stays on after the last movement, and adjustable sensitivity or lux threshold, controlling how dark it must be before the sensor operates. Set the lux threshold so daytime movement does not switch lights on unnecessarily, and set the delay long enough that lights do not cut out while someone is still in a stairwell. Getting these two settings right is the difference between a sensor people appreciate and one they disable.

Smart PIR sensors and Tuya. WiFi and Tuya compatible PIR sensors send a notification to your phone rather than switching a light directly, and can trigger other smart devices through the Smart Life app. These suit homes and small shops wanting alerts when someone enters an area after hours. They need internet for notifications, although local automations continue to work.

Load shedding. Mains powered sensors stop with the supply and resume when it returns, retaining their settings. Battery powered smart sensors continue detecting through an outage, though notifications require your router to be running, so a small UPS on the router is worth considering if alerts matter.

Buying from ZZ Marts. We stock 220V PIR motion sensor switches in wall, ceiling recessed, and waterproof outdoor versions across a range of load ratings, PIR bulb holders, motion sensor LED bulbs, wired indoor intrusion detectors for alarm systems, Tuya smart PIR sensors, and the relay modules and alarm panels to go with them. Supplied from our Karachi (Saddar) and Lahore stores with delivery across Pakistan, trading as Zam Zam Traders since 2005. Tell us the area you want to cover and the lighting load and we will recommend the right rating and mounting position.
