A no touch exit button that never gets pressed. This is an infrared door release switch. Instead of pushing a button, you pass a hand in front of the sensor and the door releases. Nothing is physically touched, which means nothing wears out and nothing collects the marks and germs that a shared button accumulates in a busy building.
Why touchless exit buttons became standard. Demand rose sharply during COVID and never really fell back, because the hygiene argument turned out to be only half the benefit. The other half is durability. A mechanical push button on a hospital corridor or a busy office door is operated hundreds of times a day, and every one of those presses wears the mechanism. A touchless sensor has no moving parts to fail, so on high traffic doors it simply lasts longer. That is why hospitals, clinics, laboratories, food premises, and pharmaceutical facilities specify them as a matter of course.
Where it belongs. Hospital and clinic corridors, laboratories and clean rooms, food preparation and packing areas, pharmaceutical facilities, office lobbies and reception areas, and any high traffic internal door. Anywhere hygiene is a formal requirement, or where the sheer volume of use would destroy a mechanical button, this is the correct choice.
Indoor placement matters, and here is why. Infrared sensing can behave unpredictably in strong direct sunlight, because sunlight contains infrared and can confuse the sensor into false triggering or reduced sensitivity. That makes this an indoor or sheltered device by nature. Corridors, lobbies, and internal doorways are ideal. If your door is fully exposed to afternoon sun or driving rain, tell us before ordering and we will recommend an outdoor rated alternative rather than let you fit the wrong thing.
Setting the detection distance. Most infrared exit buttons allow the sensing range to be adjusted, and getting this right is what separates a device people like from one they complain about. Set too far, and the door releases every time someone walks past along the corridor without intending to leave. Set too close, and users end up waving repeatedly at the panel and pressing it anyway out of frustration. A short, deliberate range that requires an intentional hand movement is almost always correct.
NO and NC wiring, the detail that goes wrong most often. Exit buttons are supplied with normally open and normally closed outputs, and which one you use depends entirely on the lock. Magnetic locks hold the door shut while powered, so releasing them requires the circuit to be broken, meaning an NC contact. Electric bolt and strike locks generally need the opposite. Wiring this backwards produces a door that either never releases or never locks, and it is the single most common installation error we see with exit devices. Tell us which lock you are pairing it with and we will confirm the correct configuration.
Power supply requirements. Unlike a simple mechanical button, an infrared sensor needs power to operate, typically 12V DC. That must come from your access control power supply, and the supply must be rated for the sensor as well as the lock and any other devices on the door. This is easy to overlook when replacing a mechanical button with a touchless one, and an undersized supply produces intermittent faults that are frustrating to diagnose.
What happens during load shedding. Because the sensor needs power, it stops working when power does. What that means for the door depends on your lock. A magnetic lock releases when power fails, so the door opens and people can leave. A fail secure bolt lock stays locked, which means without backup power nobody can exit through that door using the button. For any door on an escape route this matters a great deal. Fit a backup supply or UPS, and make sure there is an emergency break glass release as well, so exit never depends on electronics being powered.
It is not a substitute for emergency egress. An exit button, touchless or otherwise, releases the door under normal conditions. Fire exits and escape route doors generally also require a break glass emergency release that works regardless of the state of the access control system or the power supply. If the door forms part of your escape route, ask us which combination your situation calls for; we would rather specify it properly than sell you a single component.
Mounting height and position. Fit it at a comfortable height for everyone using the door, typically around waist to chest level, on the secure side. Keep the cable in conduit rather than surface clipped, because an accessible exit button cable is an obvious way to release a door from outside. Position it where a person naturally approaches the door, not behind the door swing.
Touchless or mechanical, choosing honestly. A plain push to exit button is cheaper, simpler, and completely reliable for a store room, a server room, or a door used by a handful of staff each day. There is no reason to pay more in those cases. Choose touchless where hygiene is a requirement, where traffic volume would wear a mechanical button out, or where the door is in a clinical or food environment.
Does it work in the dark? Yes. Infrared operation does not depend on ambient light.
Can it be used outdoors? Not recommended in exposed positions because of sunlight interference and weather. Ask us about outdoor rated options.
