If you are unsure which holding force to buy, this is almost certainly the one. The 280kg magnetic lock is the sensible default for the majority of installations we supply. Office entrances, shop doors, glass and aluminium framed commercial doors, clinic doors, and internal secure rooms are all well served by this rating. It is strong enough for real commercial use without paying for force the door itself could never justify.

How to choose between 180kg, 280kg and 380kg. Think about what the door is protecting and how it would be attacked. A light internal partition or a cupboard door is fine on 180kg. A main building entrance, a heavy timber door, or anything likely to be pushed hard deserves 380kg. Everything in between, which is most commercial doors, sits comfortably here. The mistake we see most often is buying the largest rating on the assumption that stronger is always better, when in practice the door leaf or frame will fail long before a correctly specified magnet does.

Double doors need one lock per leaf. This genuinely catches people out and costs them a return visit. Two doors meeting in the middle cannot be secured by a single larger magnet, because each leaf moves independently and each needs its own lock and armature plate. When specifying a double entrance, budget for two locks, two brackets, and a power supply rated to run both continuously.

Brackets, and why installations stall without them. The lock body mounts to the frame and the armature plate to the door, but which bracket you need depends entirely on the door. Inward opening doors normally take an L bracket. Frameless glass doors need a U bracket that clamps the glass. Outward opening doors and narrow aluminium sections each need their own fitting. Ordering a maglock without the matching bracket is the most common reason an electrician arrives and cannot finish the job. Send us a photograph of the door and we will supply the correct bracket with the lock.

Fail safe operation and load shedding. Magnetic locks release the instant power is cut. That behaviour is exactly why they suit escape routes, and exactly why load shedding will open the door. Decide deliberately at specification stage whether this door must stay secure through an outage. If it must, plan a backup supply or UPS. If it is an escape route, the fail safe behaviour is the point rather than a drawback.

Continuous current draw matters when you have several doors. A magnetic lock consumes power for the entire time the door is locked, unlike a bolt lock which draws only when operating. One door is straightforward. Four doors on one supply is where people run into trouble, because an undersized supply produces intermittent, difficult to diagnose faults. Tell us how many doors you are running and we will size the supply correctly.

NC wiring for exit buttons. Because the lock releases when the circuit breaks, exit buttons and release devices wire as normally closed. Reversing this produces a door that either never locks or never releases, and it remains the most frequent wiring error on maglock jobs. Confirm contact types before wiring, particularly when a keypad, exit button, and break glass release all share one door.

Fire alarm interfacing on escape routes. Where the door is on an escape route, wire the lock so that a fire alarm activation cuts power and releases it independently of the access control system. This is a basic life safety expectation and is routinely missed when fire and access systems are fitted by different contractors at different times. We supply both and can make sure they work together.

Keeping the holding force you paid for. Wipe the magnet face and the armature plate clean periodically. Dust, grit, and paint overspray between the two surfaces reduce holding force noticeably, and this is the usual reason a lock starts feeling weaker than its rating. Check the armature plate is still flush and has not worked loose over time.

Is 280kg enough for a main entrance? For many commercial entrances yes, but tell us the door material and width and we will say honestly whether 380kg would be the better choice for your specific door.

Will it work on a glass door? Yes, with the correct U bracket or patch fitting. Confirm your glass thickness with us before ordering.

Do I need the five wire version? Only if you want lock status feedback to a controller, which suits server rooms and cash offices. For most doors the standard version is sufficient.

What happens during a power cut? The door releases, because maglocks are fail safe. Fit a backup supply if it must remain secure.
