This 22mm industrial push button is supplied in two operating types: momentary push, which is active only while held, and latching On/Off, which stays engaged until pressed again. Choosing between the two variants. This is the decision that determines whether your panel works as intended, and it is worth a minute of thought. Choose momentary push for start buttons, jog and inch controls, test functions, doorbell style signals, and anything that must stop the instant the operator lets go. Choose latching On/Off for main power switches, machine enables, work lamp and fan controls, and any function that must remain on while nobody is touching it. If you are replacing an existing button, press the old one before ordering: if it springs back it is momentary, if it stays in it is latching. The two are visually identical from the front, which is why this catches people out.
Why start buttons are almost always momentary. A machine start button is normally momentary because the machine should not be held on by an operator’s finger. Pressing it energises a contactor, which then holds the circuit closed electrically. That arrangement also means the machine stops safely if power drops, rather than restarting unexpectedly when supply returns. If you are wiring a motor starter and were about to fit a latching button, check the control circuit design first.
The 22mm standard, and why it saves you trouble. 22mm is the panel cutout diameter and the international standard for industrial control devices. A 22mm button fits any 22mm hole regardless of the original manufacturer, so replacing a failed switch does not mean redrilling the panel, and you can populate one enclosure with buttons, selector switches, and indicator lamps from different sources. When ordering a replacement, measure the hole rather than the old button.
NO and NC contacts. Buttons come with normally open contacts, normally closed contacts, or both. Start functions typically use NO, so pressing completes the circuit. Stop functions use NC, so pressing breaks it, which is the safe arrangement because a cut or broken wire also stops the machine rather than leaving it running unnoticed. Where these are used. Machine control panels in factories and workshops, motor starter panels, conveyor and production line stations, pump and compressor controls, generator boards, workshop equipment, and building services panels. These are the everyday buttons of industrial control, bought by installers and maintenance staff who need a reliable replacement that fits first time.
Industrial duty, not domestic. Panel buttons are pressed thousands of times over their service life and live in environments with dust, heat, vibration, and the occasional knock. That is a different requirement from a domestic switch, and it is why industrial buttons are built the way they are. In Pakistani workshop conditions, dust ingress through a cracked housing is the most common cause of eventual contact failure.
Check panel thickness before ordering. Every panel mount device clamps within a maximum thickness. Standard sheet steel enclosures are usually within range, but thicker panels or those with additional facing may not be. Measure if there is any doubt.
Not an emergency stop device. Neither variant is an emergency stop. Emergency stops require a mushroom head, a specific latching action that stays engaged until deliberately released, normally closed contacts, and are subject to particular safety expectations. Never substitute a standard push button for one. Ask us and we will supply the correct emergency stop for your panel.

How do I tell what my old button was? Press it. If it springs back it is momentary; if it stays pressed it is latching.
