Description

The Exit Button with Key is a secure door release switch designed for controlled access environments where door opening must be authorized.

Unlike standard push exit buttons, this model requires a physical key to activate, preventing unauthorized door release. It is ideal for high-security areas where access must be restricted.

The switch supports NO (Normally Open), NC (Normally Closed), and COM outputs, making it fully compatible with magnetic locks, electric strike locks, and drop bolt locks.

Constructed with a durable metal panel, it is suitable for commercial buildings, banks, offices, and restricted security zones.

An exit control that cannot be operated by just anyone. This is a key operated switch rather than a push button. The door releases only when someone holding the key turns it, which means simply walking up to the door is not enough. That is the entire point, and it solves a problem that a normal exit button creates.

The problem it actually solves. A standard exit button releases the door for anybody standing inside the room. On most doors that is exactly what you want. On some doors it is a serious weakness: a store room accessible to the public, a server room off a shared corridor, a cash office, a pharmacy store, a plant room, or any door where a curious visitor, a child, or an unauthorised member of staff could press a button and walk straight through. A key switch removes that possibility entirely.

Where it is typically fitted. Server and communications rooms, cash handling offices, pharmacy and medicine stores, chemical and plant rooms, stock rooms in retail premises, and doors leading to roofs or restricted areas. It is also used at gates and shutters where only designated staff should be able to operate the release.

Never fit this on an escape route. This matters and we would rather say it plainly than sell you the wrong device. Occupants cannot be expected to find a key during an evacuation, and a key operated exit on an escape route is a genuine danger rather than a technicality. If the door forms part of your escape route, use a standard exit button with an emergency break glass release instead. Tell us how the door is used and we will specify it correctly.

Key management, which people underestimate. Once you fit this, the key becomes part of your security. Decide deliberately who holds one and keep a record, particularly in a business with staff turnover. Do not hang the key beside the door it operates, which defeats the entire purpose of fitting it. Where several people need access, issue individual keys rather than leaving a shared one in a drawer where nobody is accountable for it.

NO, NC and COM output. All three contacts are supplied. Magnetic locks hold the door while powered, so releasing them requires the circuit to be broken, meaning NC. Electric bolt and strike locks generally use NO. Wiring this backwards results in a door that either never releases or never locks, and it remains the most common error on access controlled doors. Tell us your lock and we will confirm the configuration.

Suits standard 12V systems. It pairs with the magnetic and bolt locks, keypads, and power supplies we stock. If you are specifying a complete door, we can supply the matched set so nothing is missing when your electrician arrives on site.

Mounting and cable. Fit on the secure side of the door at a comfortable height. Run cable in conduit, because an accessible cable would allow the door to be released without the key, which undermines the whole reason for choosing a key switch in the first place.

Load shedding. The switch itself needs no power. The lock does, and behaviour during an outage depends on which lock you have: magnetic locks release and the door opens, while fail secure bolts stay locked. For a secure room, a fail secure bolt with a key cylinder override is often the better overall combination, and we stock those too.

Can I use it on a fire exit? No. Use a standard exit button with a break glass release on escape routes.

Can I have multiple keys? Yes, and issuing individual keys is better practice than sharing one between staff.

Which contact should I use with a magnetic lock? NC.

Does it need its own power supply? No, it is a switch. The lock needs power.
